Research Interests

Research interests include Indo-European historical linguistics, with particular emphasis on historical grammar and the history of Greek, Greek dialectology, Greek and Indo-European etymology, Mycenology and Greek lexicography; the history and typology of writing systems; the methodology of research into fragmentarily attested languages, especially Phrygian and the ancient languages of the Balkans (notably Macedonian), including the so-called “Balkan Indo-European”; theories and problems of language contact, such as the linguistic situation in Anatolia in the Late Bronze Age, contacts between Asia Minor and Greece, and Celtic–Latin contact; Slavic studies, with a focus on Slavic ethnogenesis, Polish dialectology (Podhale dialects) and Slovak dialectology (Eastern Slovak), and language contact in the Spiš region from the thirteenth to the early twentieth century; the dialect and culture of the Spiš Germans (Zipser Deutsch); onomastics and substratum studies of the Polish and Slovak Spiš area; Indo-European onomastics, culture and religion; Byzantine studies and patrology; and folklore studies, including the material and spiritual culture of the Podhale region.
