Chair of Greek and Modern Greek Philology

About: The chair of Greek and Modern Greek literature is composed of a team of researchers representing various disciplines and research approaches that overlap and complement each other. The formula of Greek literature – ancient and modern – does not exhaust the scope of research fields and projects carried out at the chair.
The interests of the staff include: Old and Modern Greek grammar and languages, Greek literature from archaic period through late antiquity and Byzantium to the present day, Christian and Judeo-Christian literature, Greek theater and drama, Greek history and historiography, reception of antiquity in popular culture, teaching of classical languages and ancient culture.
The chair offers the following courses: Greek language, ancient metrics, history of Greek literature, ancient philosophy in a literary context.
Joanna Janik, Matylda Amat Obryk and Krzysztof Bielawski deal with Greek literature of the Archaic and Classical periods, Aleksandra Klęczar with Hellenistic and Imperial literature, and Agnieszka Heszen with late antique literature. In this area, the research of Krakow Hellenists on rhetorical prose, drama, and lyric poetry is being continued.
The department also includes researchers who form a separate laboratory for Byzantine, post-Byzantine, and modern Greek studies – Michał Bzinkowski and Agnieszka Heszen.
Linguistic research is conducted by Wojciech Sowa, Dariusz Piwowarczyk, and Jan German.
Due to administrative and formal requirements, Prof. Stanisław Śnieżewski, a Latinist, is also a member of the chair.
