About
The Laboratory for Ancient Literature, Classical Tradition, and Modernity (PLATAN), established in 2025 by decision of the Faculty Council of the Faculty of Philology at the Jagiellonian University, is a unit within the Institute of Classical Philology. Its aim is to bring together academics (scholars, doctoral candidates, and students, but also alumni and friends) around three thematic areas: the literature of ancient Greece and Rome, the intellectual heritage of the ancient world, and modernity.
It is conceived as a forum for meetings and comprehensive exchange of ideas between classical philologists (or more broadly: scholars of antiquity) and representatives of other academic disciplines (such as Polish studies, modern languages, philosophy, history of ideas, and others). The regularly organized seminars will address topics such as: the reception of antiquity (from the earliest times to the present), literary translations from classical languages (history, theory, and practice), the Mediterranean world in an intercultural perspective (e.g., the Near and Far East), the transfer of ancient knowledge and texts across the centuries (including digital classics), and perspectives on classical education.
The founder and initiator of the laboratory is Jacek Hajduk.
