About: The Chair of Latin and Neo-Latin Philology is a unit within the Institute of Classical Philology, Jagiellonian University in Kraków. Our research interests span Latin literature from the archaic period through the Ciceronian and Augustan ages to Late Antiquity, as well as medieval and humanist Latin literature. Particularly noteworthy are research projects devoted to Latin poetry of the late Roman Empire, including an initiative aimed at producing a comprehensive Polish translation of Claudian’s works, accompanied by a monograph-length introduction (see Tomasz Babnis), and projects focused on the Romano-Barbaric age, such as the major undertaking coordinated by Anna Maria Wasyl to prepare a complete, two-volume critical edition of Dracontius’ poetic oeuvre, with Introduction, Latin text, Polish translation, and commentary, and another resulting in the critical edition of Maximianus’ elegies published by Anna Maria Wasyl, who has also contributed to editorial projects involving Latin works by Francesco Petrarch.
Stanisław Śnieżewski, currently affiliated with the Chair of Greek and Neo-Greek Philology, has made and continues to make an exceptional contribution to the translation of Latin literature of the Imperial period into Polish. His scholarly achievements extend beyond translation works to encompass research into Greek and Roman rhetoric, Latin stylistics, acoustic instrumentation, and the application of stylometric methods to the analysis of Latin poetry.
Among our staff are scholars with a particular interest in the reception of Antiquity in European literature (Jacek Hajduk; Antoni Bobrowski). A significant aspect of the Chair’s work involves methodological reflection on the didactics of classical languages and its practical application in teaching at secondary schools with a classical curriculum, such as the famous ‘classics’ class at Bartłomiej Nowodworski High School in Kraków (Janusz Ryba).
Linguistic research conducted within the Chair includes descriptive and historical grammar of Latin, as well as studies on colloquial and dialectal Latin (Hubert Wolanin; Alicja Marczewska). Furthermore, some members of our Chair participated in a major long-term translation project of the entire corpus of Justinian’s Digest from Latin into Polish (Anna Maria Wasyl; Hubert Wolanin)
